Srinagar: The Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT), Srinagar, has developed an indigenous design software, DesignNweave, to support digital design development for carpets, Kani shawls and other handicraft and handloom products of Jammu and Kashmir.
The software has been developed after more than four years of research and development in collaboration with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Srinagar, under the aegis of the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir.
According to IICT, the software enables designers to create, develop and refine designs for traditional products and generates computerised design scripts, known as Talim, used by artisans and weavers to execute designs.
The institute said DesignNweave was designed to be compatible with a range of software and hardware platforms and included additional tools and commands intended to improve design efficiency and productivity.
IICT has fixed the price of a single-user licensed copy at ₹20,000, with the approval of the competent authority. The institute said the pricing was intended to make the software accessible to artisans, designers, manufacturers, other stakeholders and government organisations.
The initiative seeks to introduce digital design technology into Jammu and Kashmir’s traditional crafts sector while supporting the development and commercial competitiveness of locally produced handicrafts and handloom products.
IICT has invited interested stakeholders to obtain licensed copies of the software from the institute.
