JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Prosecution Department said it secured convictions in three major criminal cases within a span of two days, including two murder trials and a narcotics trafficking case.
According to the department, a Special Court under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act convicted Sajjad Ahmed Bhat for possession of 1.5 kilograms of charas. The court sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh under Section 20 of the NDPS Act. The prosecution was conducted by Special Public Prosecutor Sunil Kumar.
In Udhampur district, the Court of Additional Sessions Judge convicted Arwant Singh in a murder case involving the killing of a 70-year-old man in Sarmali village of Majalta. The court awarded life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000. The prosecution was represented by Additional Public Prosecutor Jaswant Raj and Assistant Public Prosecutor Ritu.
Meanwhile, the Court of Additional Sessions Judge, Ganderbal, convicted Mohd Shafi Magrey under Sections 302 (murder), 379 (theft) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Ranbir Penal Code. The prosecution was led by Additional Public Prosecutor Shafaq Murtaza.
Officials said the Ganderbal court recorded the conviction on the basis of evidence presented during the trial. The hearing on sentencing has been scheduled for October 15.
The Prosecution Department said the convictions were achieved through coordination with investigating agencies and sustained follow-up of the cases in court.
