SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday informed the Legislative Assembly that a proposal for construction of a new hospital building at Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, is under process following safety concerns identified in the existing structure.
Replying to a Calling Attention Motion moved by BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Itoo said the old hospital building had developed severe water seepage and waterlogging issues during 2025, prompting a structural safety audit by the Public Works Department’s Design Inspection and Quality Control (DIQC) wing in Jammu.
The audit highlighted safety concerns in the building, the minister told the House.
Itoo said that, keeping in view the safety of patients and staff, all hospital services except the outpatient department (OPD) block were shifted to the 200-bedded Mother and Child Hospital (MCH) building of Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu.
She informed the Assembly that the process for constructing a new hospital building at the existing site had already been initiated.
According to the minister, floor-wise service plans approved by a designated committee have been submitted to the Chief Architect and Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department in Jammu. The total station site plan required for preparation of the architectural design is currently being finalised.
Itoo said that once the necessary formalities and documentation are completed, the Public Works (Roads and Buildings) Department will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed hospital building.
