Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday moved a resolution in the Legislative Assembly urging the Union Government to amend the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, to exempt teachers appointed before October 31, 2019, from appearing in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).
The resolution was moved by Minister for School Education Sakeena Itoo during the ongoing Autumn Session of the Assembly.
The resolution urges the Centre to make the necessary statutory amendment to Section 23 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, to exempt all teachers appointed before October 31, 2019, from the requirement of qualifying the TET.
It further calls upon the Union Government to take the required legal measures and issue a notification through the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to provide the exemption.
Moving the resolution, the minister sought the support of the House for taking up the matter with the Centre, arguing that teachers appointed before the specified date should be exempted from the eligibility test requirement.
Several legislators participated in the discussion on the resolution, including Balwant Singh Mankotia, Ranbir Singh Pathania, Waheed Ur Rehman Para and Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh. The members highlighted various aspects of the issue and shared their views during the debate.
The discussion on the resolution remained inconclusive and will continue on the next working day of the Assembly.
