SRINAGAR: CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Monday called on all members of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to jointly press for the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory without further delay.
Speaking in the Assembly during disruptions caused by slogan shouting from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, Tarigami said legislators, irrespective of political affiliation, should collectively urge the Government of India to fulfil its commitment to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
He said the legislature remained “disempowered”, which, according to him, had led to disappointment among citizens. Tarigami described the restoration of statehood as a legitimate and long-pending demand and urged all elected representatives to raise their voice in support of it.
The CPI(M) leader also stressed the importance of Question Hour in legislative proceedings, saying it enables members to seek answers from the government and hold it accountable.
He said any disruption or stalling of Question Hour deprives legislators of an important opportunity to raise public concerns and make the government responsive to the aspirations and grievances of the people.
