SRINAGAR: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Sujit Kumar, on Tuesday urged students to trust their parents, teachers and coaches, warning them against drugs, online betting, social media traps and other harmful influences.
Addressing students, parents and dignitaries at a function organised by Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson schools, Kumar said young people possess the talent, imagination and determination needed to succeed but must resist shortcuts and instant gratification.
“Have faith in your teachers and parents. Anything that comes very easily should be approached with caution. Easy pleasures can often lead young people in the wrong direction,” he said.
The IGP cautioned students against the growing influence of harmful online activities, including betting, fraud and excessive social media use, describing them as traps that could derail their future if not handled responsibly.
He urged youngsters to remain disciplined, draw strength from their teachers and coaches and prepare themselves for future challenges with confidence and determination.
Kumar also highlighted the role of education in shaping character and responsible citizenship, recalling lessons from his own school days on the importance of civilisation and culture.
Speaking about Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson schools, he referred to their long history and contribution to education in Kashmir, describing the institution’s journey as one marked by dedication, hard work and excellence.
The IGP said Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage should serve as a guiding force for young people and help protect them from emerging social challenges.
“As long as our cultural values remain strong, our children will continue to move in the right direction,” he said.
Referring to the achievements of professionals serving in Jammu and Kashmir, Kumar said students should take pride in their roots and carry the values and strength of Kashmir wherever they go.
He also assured the gathering that the Jammu and Kashmir Police would continue to support educational institutions and remain available whenever assistance was required.
