SRINAGAR: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg on Monday directed officials to take steps to address potable water supply issues at Budgam and Nowgam railway stations during a review meeting held in Srinagar.
The meeting, convened following directions from the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, was attended by the Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Chief Engineer of the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, Superintending Engineers and senior railway officials.
According to officials, railway authorities informed the meeting that water being sourced from a nearby supply point did not meet potable standards and sought provision of safe drinking water for station staff and for filling trains.
In response, Garg directed PHE officials to source water from an alternative location identified by field officers about 2.5 kilometres upstream from the existing source.
He instructed the Superintending Engineer, PHE Circle Budgam, to prepare estimates for laying a new water supply pipeline and float tenders within 10 days in consultation with railway authorities.
Regarding water supply to Nowgam Railway Station, the Divisional Commissioner directed officials to expedite the completion of the ongoing lift water supply scheme.
The meeting also discussed the macadamisation of an access road to Parrypora Colony near the railway line. Garg directed the Additional Deputy Commissioner Budgam to conduct a joint site inspection with revenue officials, railway authorities and representatives of the colony to determine land ownership of the road stretch and take further action to improve road access for residents.
