BHOPAL: A 10-member media delegation from Jammu on Monday began a Press Information Bureau (PIB)-organised tour of Madhya Pradesh with visits to the historic Bhojpur Shiva Temple and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bhimbetka.
The tour, organised by PIB Jammu, is aimed at providing journalists with first-hand exposure to the cultural, historical and developmental landscape of the state.
At Bhojpur, located on the banks of the Betwa River, the delegation was briefed on the history and architectural significance of the temple, which is known for its massive Shiva Lingam, large stone construction and distinctive architectural design. Officials also highlighted the monument’s unfinished structure and its importance in understanding medieval building techniques and craftsmanship.
The journalists later visited the Bhimbetka rock shelters, one of India’s most significant prehistoric archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Officials at the site briefed the delegation on the discovery and archaeological significance of Bhimbetka, which was identified by archaeologist Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar in 1957-58. According to information shared with the visitors, around 750 rock shelters have been identified in the area, many of which contain prehistoric paintings.
The delegation was shown rock art depicting hunting scenes, animals, dances and other aspects of early human life. Officials explained that the paintings, created using natural pigments, offer valuable insights into prehistoric human habitation and artistic expression.
The journalists were also informed that archaeological evidence from the site spans multiple periods of human history, making Bhimbetka an important source for understanding the evolution of human culture in the Indian subcontinent.
PIB officials accompanying the delegation provided briefings at both locations and facilitated interactions related to the historical and cultural significance of the sites.
The tour will continue in Bhopal and Indore, where the delegation is scheduled to visit additional heritage, cultural and developmental sites across Madhya Pradesh.
