Srinagar: CPI(M) leader and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) J&K president M.Y. Tarigami on Saturday said teachers have a key role in promoting scientific temper, critical thinking and pluralistic values among students while contributing to the creation of an inclusive and democratic society.
In a message issued on the occasion of Teachers’ Day, Tarigami congratulated the teaching fraternity and acknowledged its role in shaping future generations, according to a statement.
He said education should encourage students to question, reason and distinguish between evidence and superstition, adding that teachers play a vital role in fostering scientific thinking, curiosity and inquiry among young people.
According to the statement, Tarigami said a modern education system should equip students to address contemporary challenges through knowledge, innovation and rational thinking.
The CPI(M) leader also stressed the need to ensure access to quality education for all children irrespective of social, economic or regional backgrounds. He referred to the expansion of educational opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir under the “Naya Kashmir” programme and called for efforts to make education inclusive and accessible.
Tarigami expressed concern over the shortage of teaching staff, particularly in rural and remote areas, and urged authorities to fill vacant posts at schools, colleges and universities.
He also called for the regularisation of temporary, ad hoc, contractual and part-time teachers and sought better service conditions and benefits for educators.
Highlighting the importance of diversity and democratic values, Tarigami said teachers have a responsibility to promote respect for different faiths, languages, cultures and traditions among students.
He further urged the government to strengthen public education, provide adequate funding to educational institutions and improve working conditions for teachers.
The CPI(M) leader said a scientifically aware, socially sensitive and democratic society could be built through a strong education system that promotes equality, constitutional values and respect for diversity.
