Srinagar: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said the party remains committed to protecting the interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and will continue its constitutional and democratic struggle for the restoration of the erstwhile state’s special status.
Addressing party workers and supporters in Beerwah area of Budgam district, Abdullah said young people have a key role in shaping the future of society and the nation. According to a party statement, he urged the youth to embrace the values of public service, patriotism and social responsibility.
The NC president said the party has consistently encouraged youth participation in politics and public life and provided opportunities for young leaders to advance within the organisation. He said several current legislators had previously been associated with the Youth National Conference.
Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, Abdullah reiterated that the National Conference remains committed to their restoration. He said the party would continue to pursue the matter through constitutional and democratic means.
According to the statement, Abdullah alleged that attempts had been made over the years to weaken the National Conference and create divisions within the party, but claimed that such efforts had not succeeded.
He also criticised opposition parties, alleging that they lacked a constructive agenda and were focused on criticism rather than raising public issues and contributing positively to governance.
The NC leader expressed hope that restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir would enable the elected government to function with greater authority and address public issues more effectively.
Abdullah also urged people to remain vigilant against divisive forces and said the party’s primary focus remained the welfare, development and prosperity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, he visited Manzhamah in Magam to offer condolences to NC leader and MLA Beerwah Mohammad Shafi Wani on the demise of his sister.
The remarks come amid continuing political debate over restoration of statehood and the constitutional changes introduced in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019.
