SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Friday commenced a three-day National Sports Day celebration on its campus under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat”.
The programme, being held from August 28 to 30, is part of the nationwide Fit India Movement initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. National Sports Day is observed annually on August 29 to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
According to the institute, activities organised on the opening day included the “Pass the Ball” and “29 Challenge” events, which witnessed participation from students and staff members.
The campaign is centred around the themes of “Tribute, Play and Move” and aims to encourage greater involvement in sports, fitness activities and awareness programmes.
In a message, NIT Srinagar Director Prof Anurag Misra underscored the importance of sports and physical activity in holistic education and urged students to actively participate in the events. He said regular engagement in sports helps promote discipline, teamwork and overall well-being.
Registrar Prof Atikur Rehman said such initiatives contribute to creating a healthy and active campus environment while helping students balance academics with physical fitness.
Dr Manoj Kumar, In-charge Faculty, School of Applied Sciences (SAS), said the celebrations were intended to encourage students and staff to incorporate physical activity into their daily routine.
SAS Officer Kowsar Ali Mir and SAS Assistant Sohail Ahmad Baba also highlighted the importance of sports in promoting fitness, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle.
The inaugural programme was attended by Assistant Security Officer Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, SAS staff members and students.
Officials said the celebrations will continue until August 30 and will feature a range of sports and fitness-related activities aimed at promoting active lifestyles among the institute community.
