Srinagar: Undergraduate admissions to Government Degree Colleges across Jammu and Kashmir increased by around 16 per cent during Phase-I of the admission process for the 2026-27 academic session, with 47,150 students securing admission, officials said on Sunday.
The figure is up from about 40,800 admissions recorded during the corresponding phase of the previous academic session.
According to the Higher Education Department, 35,040 students were admitted through direct allocation, while 12,110 secured admission through the walk-in mode.
Admissions were conducted through the Centralised Admission Portal on the basis of Class 12 merit. The online system facilitated seat allocation, upgradation and fee migration across colleges and programmes.
Director Colleges J&K, Sheikh Ajaz Bashir, said merit remained the basis for allotment of colleges and academic programmes throughout the admission process. He stated that 106 Government Degree Colleges recorded an increase in enrolment compared to the previous session, while most other institutions maintained their admission numbers.
Officials said the admissions process was completed entirely online, from registration to fee payment.
The department also announced that Phase-II admissions for vacant seats will begin after the declaration of results of the biannual and supplementary higher secondary examinations. The schedule will be notified separately on the Centralised Admission Portal.
