Srinagar: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch has arrested a man from Bengaluru for allegedly cheating gullible investors in Kashmir of around Rs 2 crore, officials said on Monday.

Junaid ul Islam, a resident of Charar-e-Sharief in Budgam district, was wanted in a case registered under Section 420 of the RPC and had been evading arrest for the last one year, they said.

“He was arrested from Mangammanapalya in Bengaluru. The arrest was made in compliance with orders from the Court of the 4th Additional Munsiff Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, which had issued a warrant against him,” an EOW spokesperson said.

The investigation prima facie substantiated allegations of cheating and financial fraud against the accused.

“The accused allegedly collected around Rs 2 crore from several individuals by representing himself as an investor associated with an e-commerce company and promising monthly returns of 10 per cent.

“After receiving the money through multiple bank accounts, he failed to honour his commitments and became unresponsive,” the spokesperson said.
