SRINAGAR: National Conference General Secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar on Tuesday said the Omar Abdullah-led government is committed to improving the economic conditions of artisans, craftsmen, traders and stakeholders associated with the tourism sector.

Sagar made the remarks while interacting with public delegations, traders’ associations and representatives of tourism bodies at the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha. MLA Hazratbal Salman Ali Sagar was also present.

According to a statement, the delegations apprised Sagar of various issues concerning their respective areas and sectors. He assured them that no effort would be spared in addressing public grievances and ensuring the provision of basic amenities. He also contacted concerned authorities and sought immediate action on several issues raised during the meeting.

Sagar said artisans, craftsmen, traders and tourism stakeholders had faced considerable difficulties over the past several years, particularly after 2019. He claimed that challenges persisted even after the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), forcing many people dependent on handicrafts and traditional skills to abandon their ancestral occupations.

He said the National Conference would continue its efforts to revive traditional sectors, create employment opportunities and promote economic activity across Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Khonakhun New Mamta Hoteliers Association also met Sagar and raised issues concerning the area. He said tourism and infrastructure development in Khonakhun and adjoining localities would receive a major boost, with developmental works worth ₹1.52 crore under way.

The projects include construction and improvement of footpaths, bridges, protection walls and other essential infrastructure, he said.

Sagar said the works would improve basic amenities, enhance the area’s appeal and help increase tourist footfall, thereby benefiting local businesses and generating employment opportunities.

Representatives of the association congratulated Sagar and expressed gratitude for the developmental initiatives being undertaken in the area.
