Every morning, thousands of private school teachers across Kashmir step into their classrooms carrying lesson plans, attendance registers, and hopes for their students’ futures. They inspire young minds, nurture talent, and help shape the next generation of doctors, engineers, civil servants, and entrepreneurs. Yet, behind their smiles and dedication lies a reality marked by financial hardship, job insecurity, and a lack of recognition. While students often become the face of academic success, the teachers who guide them remain largely invisible. They are the unsung heroes of education in Kashmir.

Over the last two decades, private schools have become an integral part of Kashmir’s educational landscape. From Srinagar to Baramulla, Anantnag to Kupwara, private educational institutions have emerged as an alternative for parents seeking quality education for their children. These schools have not only contributed to improving educational standards but have also created employment opportunities for thousands of educated youth. However, the rapid growth of private education has not always translated into better working conditions for teachers.

One of the most pressing concerns facing private teachers is inadequate pay. Many teachers, despite holding graduate or postgraduate degrees and professional teaching qualifications, receive salaries that barely cover their monthly expenses. The gap between the salaries of private and government school teachers remains significant. While government teachers benefit from stable income, annual increments, and retirement benefits, many private teachers struggle to make ends meet.

A teacher from Baramulla, who requested anonymity, shared his experience: “I love teaching and I enjoy working with students, but there are times when I wonder how long I can continue. After paying household expenses, there is very little left. Teaching is a noble profession, but teachers also need financial security.”

Such concerns are common among private educators across the Valley. Rising inflation and increasing living costs have further added to their difficulties, making it challenging for many to support their families comfortably.

Another major issue is job insecurity. Unlike government employees, private teachers often work on temporary contracts and have limited employment protections. The fear of losing one’s job due to administrative decisions, financial constraints faced by schools, or declining student enrollment remains a constant source of stress.

This insecurity became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. As schools shifted to online learning, many private teachers continued teaching from their homes, often using their own internet resources and devices. Despite their efforts, some faced salary cuts, delayed payments, or uncertainty about their future employment. The pandemic exposed the vulnerability of teachers whose livelihoods depended entirely on private institutions.

The workload of private teachers extends far beyond classroom instruction. In addition to teaching multiple subjects and classes, they are expected to prepare lesson plans, assess assignments, maintain records, attend meetings, organize extracurricular activities, and communicate with parents. Many teachers spend evenings and weekends checking notebooks, preparing examinations, and completing administrative tasks.

A female teacher from Srinagar explained, “People think our work ends when the school bell rings. In reality, much of our work continues at home. There are lesson plans to prepare, assignments to evaluate, and reports to complete. Teaching requires constant effort.”

For female teachers, the challenges can be even greater. Many must balance professional responsibilities with household duties and family commitments. In rural areas, transportation difficulties and long commutes add another layer of hardship. Yet despite these obstacles, countless women continue to serve as dedicated educators, contributing significantly to the development of their communities.

Apart from financial and professional challenges, many private teachers struggle with a lack of recognition. Teachers play a crucial role in shaping society, but their contributions often receive little public attention. Parents celebrate their children’s achievements, institutions highlight examination results, and society applauds successful professionals. However, the teachers who laid the foundation for those achievements frequently remain in the background.

The lack of professional recognition can affect morale and motivation. Many talented educators feel that their hard work is undervalued despite the immense responsibility they shoulder. Opportunities for professional development, training, and career advancement are also limited in many institutions, restricting their growth and long-term prospects.

Mental health is another aspect that deserves serious attention. The pressure to achieve academic results, satisfy administrative expectations, manage classroom responsibilities, and cope with financial concerns can take a toll on teachers’ well-being. Unfortunately, discussions about teacher stress and emotional health remain rare. Many educators silently endure anxiety and burnout while continuing to fulfill their responsibilities with dedication.

Despite these challenges, private teachers continue to demonstrate remarkable commitment. Their passion for education often outweighs the difficulties they face. They encourage struggling students, celebrate small achievements, and serve as mentors both inside and outside the classroom. Their influence extends beyond textbooks, helping shape values, character, and aspirations.

Many successful individuals in Kashmir today can trace their achievements back to a teacher who believed in them, encouraged them, and guided them during crucial stages of their lives. These contributions cannot be measured solely in terms of salaries or examination results; they represent investments in the future of society itself.

Addressing the concerns of private teachers requires collective action. School managements should strive to provide fair compensation, transparent employment policies, and opportunities for professional development. Policymakers should explore mechanisms to protect teachers’ rights and improve their working conditions. Society, too, must recognize the invaluable role educators play in building an informed and progressive community.

As Kashmir continues its journey toward educational excellence, the welfare of teachers must remain a priority. Strong educational institutions are built upon the dedication and expertise of their educators. Ignoring the challenges faced by private teachers risks undermining the very foundation of quality education.

The story of private teachers in Kashmir is ultimately one of resilience, dedication, and hope. Despite limited resources and numerous obstacles, they continue to stand before their students each day, determined to make a difference. They are not merely employees of educational institutions; they are mentors, guides, and nation-builders. It is time their contributions received the respect, recognition, and support they truly deserve.
