Cloudbursts Becoming New Normal

The skies over Jammu and Kashmir have turned unpredictable, and with them, the lives of its people. What once seemed like rare calamities; cloudbursts, flash floods, torrential downpours are now recurring assaults on fragile terrain and vulnerable communities. Each season brings fresh devastation: homes swept away, shops reduced to rubble, families mourning the dead or searching for the missing.

Orchards nurtured for decades are destroyed in minutes, paddy fields drowned under relentless rain, and farmers left staring at ruined harvests. These are not just economic losses but blows to identity and heritage, as centuries-old practices tied to land and weather collapse under the weight of climate extremes. The despair of farmers reverberates through markets, supply chains, and households, threatening food security and livelihoods across the region. Without urgent support, the backbone of the economy risks being permanently weakened.

The human tragedy is stark as the families displaced, children uprooted, elders left vulnerable, entire communities forced to rebuild from scratch. Relief measures, though immediate, cannot match the scale of destruction.

Narrow valleys funnel floodwaters with deadly force, fragile slopes crumble under heavy rain, and settlements along riverbanks face repeated devastation. Infrastructure built without climate foresight is doomed to collapse, draining resources in endless cycles of repair. What is missing is a comprehensive plan that acknowledges extreme weather as the new reality and prepares accordingly. Climate-resilient infrastructure, scientific flood management, and strict regulation of construction in hazard-prone zones must become non-negotiable priorities.

The suffering of farmers deserves particular attention, for their losses ripple far beyond individual households. When orchards are destroyed, entire supply chains collapse; from traders to transporters to markets dependent on seasonal produce. The damage to agriculture and horticulture is not only an economic setback but a blow to food security and cultural identity.

Local knowledge, when combined with scientific planning, can create effective grassroots resilience. Training villagers in disaster response, equipping them with communication tools, and involving them in planning can reduce casualties and losses. Empowering communities ensures that warnings are heeded, evacuations are swift, and recovery is collective.

The recurring cloudbursts are not isolated tragedies but part of a larger climate pattern that demands recognition and response. The choice is stark: continue to patch up after every disaster or build a future where lives and livelihoods are shielded from the fury of unpredictable skies. The people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve more than temporary relief. They deserve a vision that secures their homes, protects their fields, and ensures that the next generation does not inherit a landscape defined by loss. Extreme weather may be inevitable, but the scale of its destruction need not be. With foresight and commitment, vulnerability can be transformed into resilience, and despair into determination.

Each passing year without a long-term strategy deepens the vulnerability of communities and erodes their ability to recover. The absence of decisive measures risks normalising tragedy, turning extraordinary disasters into expected seasonal events. This acceptance of loss is unacceptable. A region so rich in culture and natural beauty cannot be allowed to slide into perpetual crisis. It demands leadership that sees beyond immediate relief and invests in a safer, sustainable future.

The time for a long-term strategy is not tomorrow; it is now. Every life lost, every farmer broken, every child displaced is a reminder that delay is complicity. Jammu and Kashmir stands at a crossroads: either continue to endure the fury of the skies with resignation or rise with resilience, foresight and determination. The people deserve protection, dignity and hope. The storms will not wait, and neither should action.
