Srinagar: The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department has issued a flood advisory after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a spell of intense rainfall over the Jhelum Basin, warning of the possibility of flash floods and a rapid rise in water levels.
According to an advisory issued by the Office of the Chief Engineer, I&FC Kashmir, the IMD has forecast a “significantly strong spell of rainfall” over the Jhelum Basin during the morning of July 21.
The advisory said South Kashmir, particularly the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian, is likely to receive 50-100 mm of rainfall. Another spell of lower-intensity rainfall is expected during the morning of July 22.
The department warned of possible flash floods and a rapid rise in water levels in channels, khuls, nallahs and other watercourses, especially in the higher reaches and hilly areas of South Kashmir. Water levels in major tributaries and the River Jhelum are also expected to rise.
The public, particularly residents of South Kashmir, has been advised to stay away from water channels, khuls, nallahs, rivers and other flood-prone areas, especially in higher reaches and hilly regions. People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and exercise caution to prevent any loss of life or property.
Residents of low-lying areas have been advised to remain vigilant, take necessary precautionary measures and stay updated with the latest weather and flood advisories issued by the authorities.
The I&FC Department said it is closely monitoring the situation and will issue further updates as required.
