Jammu: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced a mass agitation against the National Conference (NC) government in Jammu and Kashmir, with the first protest scheduled in Kashmir on July 20 and demonstrations across Jammu beginning August 1.
The decision was taken at a meeting of BJP office-bearers at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, attended by senior leaders, district presidents, morcha presidents, spokespersons and other functionaries.
Addressing the meeting, J&K BJP president and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma alleged that the NC government had failed on governance and accused it of not addressing public issues. He said the party’s campaign would seek to highlight what it described as the government’s shortcomings.
Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma said the BJP had given the government adequate time to perform but would now hold it accountable “inside the Assembly and on the streets.” He said the agitation would begin with a protest in Kashmir on July 20, followed by demonstrations across Jammu from August 1 before being expanded to district and Assembly constituency levels across the Union Territory.
BJP general secretary (organisation) Ashok Koul urged party leaders and workers to strengthen public outreach and ensure the success of the agitation, alleging that the NC government had failed to provide effective governance.
