Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday was briefed on preparations for the upcoming Chinar Book Festival and also met several public representatives and a social activist who raised issues of public and social welfare.
Dr Amit Wanchoo, Chief Convener of the Chinar Book Festival, accompanied by Shobha Kapoor of the National Book Trust (NBT), called on the Lieutenant Governor and apprised him of arrangements for the festival, scheduled to be held in Srinagar from July 18 to 26.
According to the organisers, the nine-day festival will feature participation of more than 200 publishers and book exhibitors from across the country, showcasing books in English, Urdu, Kashmiri, Hindi and several other Indian languages.
Besides the book exhibition, the festival will include literary discussions, author interactions, book launches, children’s programmes, storytelling sessions, workshops, cultural performances, Mushairas, Sufiyana music and youth engagement activities.
In separate meetings, former District Development Council (DDC) member from Vijaypur, Shilpa Dubey, met the Lieutenant Governor and projected various issues of public importance.
Former Sarpanch of Flora Nagbani, Vandana Kumari, also called on Sinha and appreciated the impact of the Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyaan in generating awareness against substance abuse and protecting the youth.
Social activist Dr Sheikh Jamsheed Ahmad of Handwara also met the Lieutenant Governor and raised welfare issues concerning different sections of society, particularly specially-abled persons.
