Jammu:  A man was arrested for allegedly vandalising a mosque and assaulting a person on the premises in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, police said on Saturday.

Pyar Singh, a resident of Patian village, had been evading arrest since the incident at Sukhcha village a few days ago, they said.

An FIR was registered at Arnas police station against him under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 298 (injuring or defiling a place of worship), Section 331(6) (house-trespass by night), Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), Section 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and Section 352 (intentional insult intended to provoke a breach of peace).

Following sustained efforts, a special police team arrested the absconding accused in Reasi, and he was taken into custody, a police spokesman said.

The police appealed to all sections of society to maintain peace, communal harmony and brotherhood and not to pay heed to rumours or misinformation that may disturb the peaceful atmosphere.

“Police reiterate their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all communities and emphasise that any attempt to disturb public order or communal harmony will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law,” the spokesman said.
