Srinagar: The Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW), University of Kashmir, organised a social service camp at Imam Bara Zadibal on the occasion of Youm-e-Ashura, with university officers, officials and student volunteers extending assistance to mourners and visitors participating in Ashura observances.
As part of the initiative, volunteers served safe packaged drinking water and juice to thousands of mourners throughout the day. The camp was organised to reflect the values of sacrifice, justice, compassion and selfless service associated with the legacy of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS).
Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said that Youm-e-Ashura conveys universal messages of truth, justice, sacrifice and commitment towards humanity. She said the ideals associated with Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) continue to inspire generations to uphold righteousness, dignity and compassion in challenging times.
Prof. Khan said educational institutions have an important role in nurturing socially responsible citizens and that such initiatives provide students an opportunity to translate humanitarian values into meaningful action. She appreciated the efforts of volunteers and reaffirmed the university’s commitment towards community engagement and social responsibility.
Registrar Prof. Nasser Iqbal said serving mourners on the occasion of Youm-e-Ashura was a humble tribute to the enduring values of Karbala. He said the university remains committed to strengthening its connect with society through initiatives promoting compassion, mutual respect and collective responsibility.
Dean Students’ Welfare Prof. Seema Singh said the social service camp reflects the university’s vision of encouraging students to participate in humanitarian activities and community welfare. She appreciated the enthusiasm and dedication of student volunteers who remained engaged throughout the programme.
Dean, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Pervez Ahmed, who also attended the camp, said the message of Karbala transcends religious and geographical boundaries and inspires humanity with values of courage, patience, justice and sacrifice. He emphasised the role of educational institutions in creating opportunities for students to engage with society through meaningful service.
Cultural Officer Dr. Shahid Ali Khan said Youm-e-Ashura represents lessons of humanity, resilience and service to others. He appreciated the volunteers for their dedication and said such initiatives strengthen the culture of social responsibility among students.
The social service camp received appreciation from mourners and members of the public, who acknowledged the university’s continued efforts towards humanitarian outreach and community service during important occasions.
