SRINAGAR: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology, Satish Sharma on Tuesday conducted an extensive tour of several areas of Srinagar to review preparations for the forthcoming Muharram observances and directed officials to ensure timely completion of all essential works.
The minister was accompanied by MLA Tanvir Sadiq, senior officers of the district administration and officials from various line departments.
During the visit, Sharma toured several areas, including Mir Bahari, Meena Bazar, Moti Mohalla, Batt Mohalla, Gucchi Mohalla, Kathidarwaza, Madin Sahib, Tibetan Colony, Butt Colony and Mandibal, to assess ongoing works and review departmental preparedness.
He inspected arrangements related to street lighting, sanitation, drainage, drinking water supply, road connectivity, cleanliness drives and other public utility services. Stressing the need for coordinated efforts, the minister directed all concerned departments to work proactively to ensure that civic amenities are put in place well before the commencement of Muharram.
Sharma also reviewed the preparedness of the Power Development Department and the Urban Environmental Engineering Department, emphasizing the need for uninterrupted electricity and water supply during the observance period. He instructed officials to immediately address deficiencies and maintain round-the-clock monitoring of essential services.
At various locations, the minister interacted with local residents, community representatives and members of Muharram committees, who highlighted several concerns and requirements. Assuring them of prompt action, Sharma said the government remains committed to facilitating the smooth and peaceful observance of Muharram and would address all genuine issues on priority.
The minister also visited the historic Imambara Madin Sahib, where he reviewed arrangements for devotees and mourners. He directed the concerned agencies to ensure proper sanitation, adequate lighting, drinking water facilities and hassle-free movement around the religious site.
During the visit, Tanvir Sadiq highlighted several locality-specific issues and urged departments to expedite pending works.
Speaking on the occasion, Sharma underscored the significance of Muharram and said providing adequate civic amenities and public services during important religious occasions remains a top priority of the government.
“The administration and all the concerned departments must work in close coordination to ensure that the required arrangements are completed within the stipulated timeframe. Every effort should be made to provide seamless services and create an enabling environment for peaceful observance of Muharram,” he said.
Officials accompanying the minister assured that all directions issued during the inspection would be implemented promptly and pending issues resolved on priority.
