During the session, the committee emphasized that its primary objective remains upholding the dignity of the House while ensuring that robust checks and balances are maintained within the democratic framework of Jammu and Kashmir.

As a vital permanent panel of the House, the Ethics Committee is explicitly designed to oversee the moral and ethical conduct of the state’s lawmakers. It holds the mandate to oversee the Code of Conduct for Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and examine specific cases of ethical violations or potential misconduct referred to it by the Speaker or the House.

Crucially, the committee also acts as a vital bridge to the public by providing an official, structured mechanism to probe citizens’ complaints against the legislature, thereby preserving the integrity, dignity and credibility of democratic traditions within the Assembly.

The Chairman stressed that the faith of the public is the bedrock of our democratic institutions. By rigorously monitoring ethics and addressing the grievances impartially, this committee ensures that the conduct of every lawmaker remains aligned with the highest standards of public trust, he added.
