Jammu/Srinagar: Police on Tuesday detained a “notorious” drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act in Rajouri district and lodged him in jail, officials said.

He has been identified as Nahid Choudhary, a resident of Peer Kanju in the district.

Officials said that as the accused is involved in multiple cases of drug peddling, the competent authority issued detention orders against him under the PIT-NDPS Act.

Following the execution of the detention order, Choudhary was lodged in the central jail in Kot Bhalwal in Jammu.

The action against Choudhary is part of the crackdown on drug smuggling and narcotics networks under the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan, launched on April 11.

Meanwhile, in Anantnag, police arrested one Umar Nabi Khan of Ranbirpora, Kehribal, at Mattan–Kehribal road, after six grams of heroin-like substance, ₹11,700 in cash, one mobile phone, and a wallet were recovered from his possession.

In Ganderbal, police arrested Abid Ahmad Lone of Surfraw, at Baghpati Surfraw after cannabis-like substance was recovered from his possession.

Cases under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act have been registered at respective police stations in both these instances for further investigation, police said.
