Jammu: Satish Sharma on Sunday emphasized the importance of sports, youth empowerment and healthy lifestyles in building a strong and drug-free Jammu and Kashmir while addressing the closing ceremony of the BSF Jammu Region Lawn Tennis Spandan League 2026 at Tennis Court, SHQ BSF, Indreshwar Nagar, Miran Sahib.

The event was organised under the banner of the Border Security Force Diamond Jubilee celebrations commemorating 60 years of dedicated service by the force to the nation.

The ceremony witnessed participation of senior BSF officers, jawans, sports officials, athletes and distinguished guests. The tournament brought together players and sports enthusiasts and reflected values of discipline, endurance, commitment and healthy competition associated with the BSF.

Addressing the gathering, Satish Sharma said sports are not merely about competition and medals but also serve as a medium for character building, social transformation and nation building.

He lauded the BSF for organising an event that combines sports with a larger social and national purpose and said institutions like the BSF continue to inspire society through dedication and discipline both on and off duty.

The Minister said events like the Spandan League create opportunities for youth engagement and encourage values necessary for building a healthy and progressive society.

Referring to his personal connection with the armed forces, Satish Sharma said he has immense respect for the sacrifices and commitment of soldiers who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation.

“The values of discipline, service and duty exhibited by the men and women in uniform inspire generations and strengthen the nation’s social fabric,” he said.

Highlighting the role of sports in shaping youth, the Minister said sports provide confidence, purpose and direction and help instill discipline, teamwork, resilience and determination among young people.

Expressing concern over the growing menace of drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir, Satish Sharma termed narcotics a serious threat to society, especially the younger generation.

He said drugs are targeting vulnerable youth and creating social and emotional distress across communities.

Calling sports one of the most effective deterrents against substance abuse, the Minister said active participation in games keeps youth positively engaged and channels their energy towards productive pursuits.

“Every young individual who chooses sports chooses discipline over addiction and determination over distraction. Sports create a sense of belonging and purpose, helping youth stay away from destructive influences,” he remarked.

The Minister also stressed the importance of healthy lifestyle choices and balanced nutrition, particularly for athletes and youth, urging young people to adopt healthier and natural food habits.

He reiterated the government’s commitment towards promoting sports culture, creating opportunities for athletes and ensuring a supportive ecosystem for youth empowerment across Jammu and Kashmir.

Satish Sharma appreciated the efforts of the organising committee, BSF officials and all stakeholders associated with the successful conduct of the tournament.

He also acknowledged the support extended by Sports Authority of India and Khelo India in encouraging sports excellence and nurturing emerging talent.

Congratulating the winners and participants, the Minister said every athlete who stepped onto the court had already emerged victorious by embracing discipline, dedication and sportsmanship.

He encouraged youth to continue striving for excellence and contribute positively towards society.

The Minister reaffirmed that strong institutions, active youth participation and a vibrant sports culture together hold the key to building a healthier, stronger and drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.

The ceremony concluded with prize distribution among winners and participants amid enthusiasm and renewed resolve to further strengthen sports culture and youth engagement in the region.
