614 FIRs registered, 646 arrests made; large quantities of narcotics seized
Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Administration has reported significant progress under the ongoing 100-day “Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan”, highlighting a coordinated and comprehensive effort to combat drug abuse, strengthen rehabilitation services, and intensify action against narcotics networks across the Union Territory.
According to officials, the campaign has witnessed remarkable public participation and strong inter-departmental coordination involving the Health, Social Welfare, Information, Police, Education and other allied departments.
As part of the massive awareness drive, a total of 2,16,123 awareness programmes have been conducted across Jammu and Kashmir, with participation exceeding one crore people. These initiatives included mega padyatras, school and college outreach programmes, village-level campaigns, youth engagement activities, seminars, rallies, sports and cultural events, and community interactions aimed at educating people about the harmful effects of drug abuse.
Mental health and counselling support systems were also strengthened during the campaign. Under the Tele-MANAS initiative, 2,786 calls were received, reflecting growing public confidence in institutional mental health and addiction support services.
The Health Department’s Addiction Treatment Facilities (ATFs) treated 44,602 patients during the campaign period, including 44,263 OPD cases and 339 IPD admissions. Officials said 148 patients were successfully treated and discharged.
Rehabilitation efforts by the Social Welfare Department also showed encouraging results. Drug De-Addiction and Rehabilitation Centres (DDACs) run by the department received 441 patients, while 742 individuals underwent counselling sessions. Eighteen patients fully recovered, while rehabilitation support continues for others undergoing treatment.
Similarly, police-run counselling and rehabilitation centres registered 451 patients, provided counselling to 786 individuals, and facilitated the recovery of 138 persons.
Meanwhile, the administration intensified its crackdown on narcotics networks under the NDPS Act. During the campaign, J&K Police registered 614 FIRs, arrested 646 persons, apprehended 435 drug peddlers, and identified 160 drug hotspots across the region.
As part of deterrent measures, authorities sealed or demolished 37 houses linked to drug peddlers. Immovable properties worth nearly ₹25.97 crore were seized or attached, while additional properties worth ₹3.70 crore were demolished. Movable assets worth ₹1.67 crore were also seized.
Action was also taken against the misuse of transport and pharmaceutical channels linked to narcotics activities. During the campaign, 252 driving licences and 111 vehicle registrations were cancelled. Authorities also suspended 104 drug store licences and cancelled two others.
Security and enforcement agencies seized substantial quantities of narcotics, including 3.8 kg of heroin, 32.92 kg of charas, and 222.31 kg of ganja. In addition, illegal poppy cultivation spread over 21 marlas of land was destroyed.
To strengthen surveillance and preventive vigilance, authorities inspected 3,067 chemist shops, installed 2,815 CCTV cameras at vulnerable locations, and conducted checks in 977 schools and hospitals.
The administration also undertook intelligence-based operations during the campaign. Officials said 107 suspects were examined, 2,807 peddlers identified, and 11 PIT-NDPS detentions carried out under preventive detention laws.
Reiterating its commitment to building a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir, the administration said it would continue to focus on public participation, strict enforcement, rehabilitation support, youth engagement, and coordinated institutional action.
The administration also appealed to citizens, community leaders, educational institutions, religious organisations, and civil society groups to continue supporting the “Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan” to help safeguard the future of the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
