Srinagar: The district administration in Doda has imposed a two-month ban on unauthorized assemblies and protests in parts of the town under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), citing apprehensions of disturbance to public order, officials said.

According to officials, the order was issued by District Magistrate Krishan Lal, who stated that the restrictions were necessary in view of anticipated large gatherings linked to public events involving recently released AAP MLA Mehraj Malik in the district.

The order notes that authorities have observed certain groups planning demonstrations and attempting to mobilize crowds, which could potentially lead to untoward incidents and disrupt peace.

Under the restrictions, any unauthorized gathering of five or more persons, as well as the organization of protests or demonstrations in designated public areas, has been prohibited.

The order applies to key locations including Clock Tower Chowk, Dessa Road up to Akramabad, the sports stadium area, a 100-metre radius around the stadium, and the stretch from Clock Tower to the old bus stand.

Officials said such gatherings could obstruct the movement of commuters and pedestrians and pose risks to public safety, necessitating preventive measures.

The administration clarified that events with prior permission will remain exempt from the restrictions.

Officials further said that violators will face action under Section 223 of the BNSS.

The move comes amid heightened political activity in the district, with authorities maintaining that the restrictions are aimed at ensuring peace and preventing disruption to public life.
