Jammu: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, IT, Transport, Youth Services & Sports, and Science & Technology Satish Sharma on Thursday emphasized the pivotal role of youth in shaping a progressive and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir, calling for collective efforts to build a drug-free society, accelerate digital growth, and develop a world-class sports ecosystem.

The event was attended by international badminton star Saina Nehwal, along with sports enthusiasts, academicians, and people from various walks of life.

Addressing students at the India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Jammu Conference, the minister said the future of the Union Territory lies in the energy, discipline, and vision of its youth. He highlighted that youth engagement remains central to the government’s policy framework, with focused investments in skill development, digital empowerment, and entrepreneurship.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to a Nasha Mukt J&K, Sharma said drug abuse poses a serious threat to society and the aspirations of young people. He stressed that while enforcement measures are being strengthened, societal participation is key. “Every young individual who chooses to stay away from drugs and guides others towards a healthier path is contributing to nation-building,” he said.

He outlined a multi-pronged strategy involving awareness campaigns, improved access to counselling, strengthened rehabilitation infrastructure, and coordinated action with law enforcement agencies to curb drug trafficking.

Highlighting the role of technology, Sharma said the government is working to build a robust digital ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir. He noted investments in IT infrastructure, innovation hubs, and startup incubation centres to equip youth with future-ready skills. Efforts are also underway to expand internet connectivity, promote e-governance, and create employment opportunities in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data analytics.

“Our aim is to make Jammu and Kashmir not just a consumer of technology, but a creator of innovation,” he said.

On sports, the minister said Jammu and Kashmir has immense potential to emerge as a premier destination for winter and adventure sports, along with excellence in mainstream disciplines. He reiterated the government’s commitment to developing world-class infrastructure, promoting grassroots participation, and enabling youth to compete at national and international levels.

He also stressed the inclusion of rural and border areas in sports initiatives to ensure equitable growth, adding that programmes under Youth Services & Sports are aligned with broader goals of health, discipline, and social cohesion.

Calling upon students to adopt a healthier and purposeful lifestyle, Sharma said the government will continue to provide opportunities, platforms, and support systems to help youth realise their full potential.
