Ganderbal: A large-scale Shikara rally was held at Manasbal Lake on Tuesday as part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyaan, aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse and promoting a healthier society.

The event was organised by the District Administration Ganderbal in collaboration with the Wular Manasbal Development Authority. The rally was flagged off by Chief Executive Officer WMDA, Ahsanul Haq Chishti, in the presence of Assistant Commissioner Revenue Ganderbal Dr. Sheikh Salahuddin, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Umer Urfaan, and other officials, along with members of civil society and the Shikara community.

Dozens of Shikaras, decorated with banners and placards carrying messages like “Say No to Drugs,” moved across the lake, spreading awareness among locals and tourists. Officials said the initiative aimed to use the region’s tourism appeal to amplify the message against substance abuse.

Earlier, an awareness programme was held where students from various educational institutions delivered speeches highlighting the harmful effects of drug addiction on health and society.

Addressing the gathering, CEO WMDA Ahsanul Haq Chishti said that building a drug-free society requires sustained effort and collective responsibility from families, schools, and communities. ACR Ganderbal Dr. Sheikh Salahuddin emphasized the need to safeguard youth, calling them a vital asset of society, while DSP Umer Urfaan stressed the importance of public cooperation in tackling drug trafficking.

Following the Shikara rally, a procession of students, teachers, and officials marched from Manasbal Park to Kondabal High School, continuing the awareness campaign.

The event concluded with a pledge ceremony at Kondabal High School, where participants committed to working towards making Ganderbal a drug-free district.
