JAMMU: Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Transport, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology Satish Sharma on Tuesday underscored the importance of engaging youth through sports while addressing the grand finale of the 2nd Sher-e-Kashmir T20 Cricket Tournament held at M.A. Stadium.

Highlighting the transformative role of sports in society, the Minister said that such tournaments provide a constructive and positive platform for youth to showcase their talent, develop discipline and remain away from social evils such as drug abuse.

He said sports play a vital role not only in ensuring physical fitness but also in nurturing leadership qualities, discipline, confidence and the spirit of teamwork among young individuals.

Referring to the theme of the tournament, the Minister lauded the efforts of the Youth National Conference for organising the event under the “Say No to Drugs” initiative. He termed the tournament a significant step towards channelling the energy of youth in a positive direction and creating awareness against the menace of drug abuse.

Satish Sharma reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and ensuring wider participation of youth in sports activities across Jammu and Kashmir. He said the government is making sustained efforts to create better sporting facilities and opportunities for young people so that they can excel in their chosen fields.

The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from several teams, including KT Lions, Royal Legends Club, Warriors XI, Rising Stars, Friends Club and Young Strikers, reflecting the growing interest of youth in cricket and competitive sports across the region.

Congratulating the players, the Minister appreciated their sportsmanship, dedication and competitive spirit. He said that such tournaments foster unity, camaraderie and a sense of purpose among the youth while also helping them channel their abilities in a meaningful manner.

He encouraged the young players to remain committed and pursue sports as a means of achieving excellence, building character and contributing positively to society.

The Minister also complimented the organisers for the successful conduct of the tournament and expressed hope that more such initiatives would be organised in future to engage youth in a constructive and meaningful way.

The event was attended by senior National Conference leader Rattan Lal Gupta, Tejinder Paul Singh Aman, former minister Bahu Ram Pal, other senior party leaders and a large number of youth participants.
