Srinagar: Sopore Police on Tuesday said it had arrested eight persons for allegedly disrupting a student protest at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore and creating law and order disturbances in the area.

According to a police press note, the arrests were made during a series of overnight raids carried out after authorities found that several “miscreants” had infiltrated what was otherwise a peaceful protest by students.

Police said the accused allegedly attempted to exploit the situation by instigating unrest and engaging in unlawful activities, including vandalism that resulted in damage to public property.

Officials said a targeted operation was launched immediately after the incident, leading to the arrest of eight persons involved in the disturbances.

The police further stated that 25 more persons have been identified in connection with the case and efforts are underway to apprehend them at the earliest.

Officials appreciated the cooperation of students, parents and local residents in helping maintain peace during the incident. They urged the public to continue supporting law enforcement agencies by sharing information about anyone involved in creating disturbances.

Police said strict action in accordance with the law would be taken against anyone attempting to take advantage of sensitive situations to disrupt public order.

Sopore Police said it remains committed to maintaining peace, security and normalcy in the area with the support of local residents.
