Jammu: Two persons were killed while around 29 others sustained injuries after a passenger bus overturned following a collision with an SUV on the Jourian–Akhnoor road on the outskirts of Jammu city on Monday, officials said.

The accident took place in the Kotgarhi area when the bus, travelling from the border area of Jourian towards Akhnoor and reportedly at high speed, collided head-on with a Scorpio vehicle. The impact caused the bus to skid off the road and overturn, they said.

Two people died on the spot while 29 others sustained injuries in the mishap, officials said.

Locals and police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. Eleven injured persons were shifted to Sub-District Hospital Akhnoor, while 18 others were taken to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital Jammu for treatment, they added.

GMC Principal Dr Ashutosh Gupta said two persons were brought dead to the hospital. He added that the injured admitted to the hospital are stable and none appear to be in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha condoled the loss of lives in the accident.

In a condolence message, the Lieutenant Governor said he was pained by the loss of precious lives in the tragic accident and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

“Pained by the loss of precious lives in the tragic bus accident in Akhnoor. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families in this hour of grief. Praying for a speedy recovery of the injured,” he said.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident, and further investigation is underway, officials said.
