DC Kupwara reviews status of implementation of RPwD Act

KUPWARA: Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Shrikant Suse, today chaired a meeting of concerned officers to review the implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act in the district.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Planning Officer, Assistant Commissioner Development, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer, Assistant Director FCS&CA, Lead District Manager, CSC Manager, and representatives from the R&B and Social Welfare Departments.

Chairperson of Empowering WO&DP Trust, J&K, also participated in the deliberations.

A comprehensive discussion was held on key issues concerning PwDs in the district. These included the coverage of Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards, coverage under VB-G RAM G, PMAY and SBM, accessibility in government buildings, banks as well as transport, Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, Coverage under different social security schemes, issues related to FCS&CA department.

The Deputy Commissioner reviewed the progress on each aspect and directed the Chief Medical Officer and other concerned departments to devise a block-wise schedule for conducting special outreach camps for Persons with Disabilities to address the grievances as well as coverage of different schemes as per eligibility.

With regard to accessibility, the Deputy Commissioner directed a comprehensive audit of all government buildings and bank branches in the district. The audit will assess infrastructure gaps and initiate necessary modifications to make these facilities PwD-friendly.

To ensure seamless banking experience for especially abled citizens, the Lead District Manager was directed to establish a dedicated helpline number to address issues. This helpline will facilitate timely redressal of grievances faced by PwDs in accessing banking services.

Discussions also held regarding Setting up of District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC) which would provide rehabilitative support to persons with disabilities.

The Deputy Commissioner stressed that district-level efforts will continue to align with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act and national frameworks for empowerment of the Persons with Disabilities.
