Srinagar: On the occasion of Radio Day, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, paid rich tributes to the enduring legacy of All India Radio Srinagar formerly known as Radio Kashmir for its invaluable role in preserving and promoting the region’s cultural and pluralistic heritage.

In his message, Dr. Farooq fondly recalled the historic beginnings of radio broadcasting in Jammu and Kashmir, noting that its very first transmission carried the soul-stirring recitation of the Holy Quran by Madar-e-Meharban Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah. “That first beam of broadcast,” he said, “was not merely a signal sent across the airwaves; it was a message of faith, unity, and hope that resonated in every household across the Valley.”

Reflecting on its remarkable journey, Dr. Farooq observed that radio in Jammu and Kashmir has truly come of age. “Over the decades, it has crafted an enduring legacy of artistic brilliance and cultural milestones. From celebrating our rich local traditions and providing a provincial platform to budding artists, to keeping our people informed about regional and global developments, radio has profoundly shaped the cultural milieu of Kashmir.”

He emphasised that while the medium has evolved with changing times and embraced diversification, there remains immense potential to further align it with contemporary aspirations and technological advancements.

Extending his warm wishes, Dr Farooq congratulated the entire team of AIR Srinagar. He paid heartfelt tributes to its distinguished galaxy of broadcasters, newsreaders, producers, technicians, and staff whose dedication and creativity have transformed it into a cherished institution.

“Radio is not merely a medium of communication; it is the heartbeat of our collective memory and the voice of our shared, unique and historical identity.”
