Uri: Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Bijhama in the Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has been operating without a principal for the past two months, thereby affecting the overall work culture of the institution.

A delegation of concerned parents informed GNS that the position has remained vacant since the transfer of the previous principal.

“The government is yet to appoint a new principal,” said local residents.

In addition to the absence of a principal, locals also raised concerns about a significant shortage of teaching staff, which is severely impacting the school’s academic standards.

“There is a shortage of lecturers for key subjects such as Physics, Biochemistry, and Commerce. This shortage is taking a toll on students’ education,” they added.

According to local residents, a similar staff crisis is being witnessed across various higher secondary schools in the region.

Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Uri lacks lecturers in Economics, Education, Physics, Chemistry, Urdu, English, and Physical Education. Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Uri is without lecturers in English, Urdu, Political Science, Statistics, and Physical Education. Government Higher Secondary School, Nambla faces a severe shortage in Chemistry, Physics, all subjects in the Arts stream, and even lacks Mathematics teachers for 8th and 9th grades. Government Higher Secondary School, Boniyar has a shortage of lecturers in Physics, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Economics, Urdu, English, and Persian. Meanwhile, Government Higher Secondary Schools in Salamabad, Sultandaki, Gingal, and Phalipora Boniyar are also facing a critical shortage of lecturers across multiple subjects.

The residents have appealed to the Education Minister and the MLA of Uri to intervene and ensure the prompt appointment of a new principal at GHSS Bijhama, along with subject-specific lecturers across all higher secondary schools in Uri to address the ongoing issues. (GNS)
