Srinagar: Senior Congress leader and MLA Dooru, Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Monday called for the immediate restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that it is a fundamental right and a promise made multiple times by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during past election campaigns.

“Statehood is our right and our first demand. The Prime Minister himself assured in meetings and election rallies that statehood would be restored after the elections. What is stopping them now?” Mir asked while speaking to reporters as per news agency KINS.

Mir questioned whether the delay is due to the people’s decision to not vote for the BJP.

“Are the people of J&K being punished for not supporting the BJP? The PM made promises to win public trust, but people chose leaders who they believed could address their concerns. The Prime Minister should respect his promises and honor the aspirations of the people,” he said.

The demand for statehood has been a significant issue in J&K since the region was downgraded to a Union Territory in 2019 following the removal of Article 370. Leaders across parties argue that restoring statehood is essential for addressing the hopes and concerns of the people.

“Restoring statehood is not just a matter of governance but also about respecting the dignity and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Mir added, urging the government to act promptly.
