The selected story is from his recently published Kashmiri language book, “Bachi, Bachi Doctor te Bachi Doctori,” which was released last year by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages at the Historic Tagore Hall in Srinagar.

The narrative centers on a poor young man whose elderly mother dies in a government hospital due to a postponed and subsequently canceled surgery. The surgery is delayed to prioritize a minister’s relative, leading to fatal consequences for the fasting elderly woman, who suffers from hypoglycemia and dies of sudden cardiac arrest. The young man, shattered by his mother’s death, reacts violently, resulting in his arrest and imprisonment, which prevents him from attending his mother’s last rites. During his imprisonment, he develops a psychiatric disorder. Upon his release years later, he faces further abuse from his village, culminating in his admission to a psychiatric hospital. The story poignantly underscores the impact of stressors in triggering or exacerbating psychiatric illnesses and emphasizes the critical need to address these issues to prevent severe mental health crises.

Dr. Showkat Shifa is also an acclaimed poet. His debut poetry collection, released by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages and MAS at Tagore Hall in 2021, won the Shahpara Maraaz Award for the best book of the year. In 2022, he was invited by the Sahitya Academy to recite his poetry in New Delhi.

Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal of GMC Anantnag, extended her congratulations to Dr. Showkat Hussain Tali for this prestigious honor, lauding his remarkable literary contributions and his significant role in enriching Kashmiri literature.
