In Loving Memory of Prof. Abdul Ghani Madhosh

The tranquillity of a Saturday morning was abruptly interrupted by the saddening news of the passing away of Professor Abdul GhaniMadhosh, a stalwart in the fields of education and psychology- InnaLillahiWa Inna IlayhiRaji’un (Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return).

A towering figure in academia, he left behind a legacy of wisdom, compassion and unparalleled dedication to the betterment of education sector here. Prof. Madhosh’s passing has left a profound void in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him and spending a moment with him for he was an institution in himself.

Born in the month of October in 1942 in SarnalAnantnag, Prof. Madhosh’s early life was marked by resilience and fortitude. After the demise of his father, Mohammad Abdullah Wani, he was lovingly raised by his mother and elder sister, a testament to the strength of familial bonds that shaped his character.

Prof. Madhosh embarked on his educational journey from the Government Middle School in SarnalAnantnag, where his innate curiosity and academic prowess began to blossom. He continued his quest for knowledge at SP College Srinagar, laying the foundation for a distinguished academic career. His pursuit of excellence led him to Aligarh Muslim University, where he earned his Master’s degree in Child Psychology before obtaining his PhD.

Upon returning to Kashmir, Prof. Madhosh dedicated himself to the noble profession of teaching, joining the esteemed faculty of Kashmir University. His passion for psychology and his innate ability to inspire and mentor students propelled him to the position of Dean of Psychology, where he left an indelible mark on generations of aspiring psychologists.

Beyond the confines of academia, Prof. Madhosh’s impact reverberated in socio-political spheres as well. His steadfast principles and unwavering integrity garnered respect across party lines, as evidenced by the unanimous offer of a LokSabha ticket in 1971 which he vehemently rejected as a testament to his unwavering commitment to his principles.

Throughout his illustrious career, Prof. Madhosh remained deeply involved in various education committees of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, tirelessly advocating for reforms and initiatives aimed at enhancing the educational landscape of the region. In his final days, Prof. Madhosh resided in Srinagar, where he continued to inspire and enlighten those around him with his wisdom and kindness.
