Oncology has undergone a remarkable transformation since the discovery of Nitrogen Mustard during World War II. Today, we celebrate the significant advancements made in cancer treatment, particularly in the field of targeted therapy. With hundreds of chemical molecules and specialized antibodies at our disposal, the fight against cancer has reached new heights.

Targeted therapy, also known as precision medicine, has revolutionized the way we approach cancer treatment. In the late nineties, the discovery of antibodies opened new avenues for treating lymphoma and breast cancer. These specialized drugs have proven highly effective in targeting specific cancer cells, providing hope and improved outcomes for patients.

Moreover, recent breakthroughs include the emergence of small molecules and immunotherapy, the cutting-edge treatments have ushered in a new era of cancer management. A prime example is Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, once a fatal disease that necessitated allogeneic bone marrow transplants, carrying a 30% mortality rate. With the discovery of precision medicine, the outlook for patients has been transformed, with over 90% surviving beyond 20 years.

Common cancers have not been left behind in the advancements. Various such drugs have significantly improved lymphoma survival rates by nearly 20%. Certain drugs used in Her2 positive breast cancer, has produced remarkable results, multiplying the survival rates for this breast cancer subtype manifold. In various forms of lung cancer, which traditionally responded poorly to chemotherapy, the introduction of precision medicine has led to transformative outcomes. Patients who once faced an average survival of only one year are now living beyond three years. Additionally, immunotherapy drugs have revolutionized the survival rates of another subtype of lung cancer.

Advances in supportive care have also played a vital role in the progress of cancer treatment. Growth factors have reduced the mortality of infections during cancer therapy. Innovations in drug delivery through catheters and other methods, along with improved supportive care techniques like ventilation, have further enhanced patient outcomes.

While the incidence of cancer continues to rise in India and other countries, we are witnessing a significant improvement in survival rates across multiple cancer types. Childhood cancers, once a devastating diagnosis, are now curable in nearly 70% of cases. Survival rates for lung cancer have tripled, and breast cancer outcomes have multiplied many times over.

As we celebrate these advancements in cancer treatment, we remain committed to ongoing research and innovation. The tireless efforts of scientists, healthcare professionals, and patients have paved the way for a brighter future in the battle against cancer. Together, we will continue to explore new frontiers in oncology and strive for a world free from the burden of this disease.
