From time-to-time Indian artists with their innovation and expertise have enriched Indian art. There are many contemporary artists whose contributions have provided universal fame to in Indian contemporary art. One such artist whose work represents the rich tapestry of cultural diversity and fusion of tradition and modernity, is renowned artist Bharti Kher. In captivating realm of Indian contemporary art, the influential contributions of Bharti Kher and her innovative artistic exploration of themes such as identity, feminism, and cultural symbolism have paved way for generations of artists to follow.
Born in London, England, in 1969Kher’s artistic journey is marked by a deep exploration of identity and cultural symbolism.She studied at Middlesex Polytechnic, London, from 1987 to 1988, and then attended the Foundation Course in Art and Design at Newcastle Polytechnic from 1998 to 1991, receiving a BA Honours in Fine Art, Painting, before moving to India in 1993, where she lives and works today.
Kher has explored various mediums and themes never resorting to one particular style. Her iconic series “The Bindis” has garnered international acclaim, where she employs thousands of bindis (traditional forehead adornments) to create mesmerizing, large-scale artworks. Through these intricate and labor-intensive installations, Kher challenges societal norms, delving into notions of femininity, spirituality, and cultural identity.
Bharti Kher’s works also serve as a powerful voice for feminism and the female experience. In her sculptures and installations, she often incorporates the imagery of animals, particularly the hybridization of humans and animals. These creations symbolize the complexities and contradictions of womanhood, exploring themes of fertility, transformation, and the blurred boundaries between human and animal existence.
Kher’s artistic practice is characterized by her innovative use of materials and sculptural interventions. She transforms everyday objects, such as saris, bindis, and furniture, into thought-provoking installations. By repurposing and recontextualizing these objects, Kher invites viewers to question their preconceived notions and societal constructs, challenging established hierarchies and reimagining the possibilities of art.
Kher’s works have gained global recognition, with exhibitions held at prominent international venues, including the Tate Modern, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
