‘My Youth My Pride’: Series of sports events organised across Jammu and Kashmir

JAMMU: Moving ahead in its mission to take sports to the doorsteps of athletes, a Hockey competition was organized in the Sports Stadium Poonch today as part of the My youth My Pride initiative of the Government.

Dr. Anitipal Singh was the chief guest on the occasion, while Narjeet Singh was the guest of honor.

Sunil Raina and Mohammad Showkat officiated the matches. A large number of people were present on the ground and with each passing minute, it only swelled up.

Meanwhile, a two-day football competition also concluded in the sports stadium. Saleem Banday, Secretary TT Association Poonch was the chief guest, and many spectators including veteran football players were present at the venue.

Similarly, a hockey tournament was conducted at Subash Stadium Udhampur, and Preeti Khajuria, councilor ward number one presided over the function as chief guest, while Rajinder Digra, District Information Officer, and S.Ranjeet Singh, social activist were the guests of honor.

The event which estimated the participation of seventy hockey players along with ten officials from the district was supervised by Naveen Sharma and his team.

In the other events, a cricket championship was inaugurated in Kathua’s Sports Stadium. A total of eight teams are participating in the event.

In the first match, A.J Sports Academy Kathua defeated Government Boys Higher Secondary School Kathua by 6 wickets.

The matches are being officiated by a panel of umpires consisting of Vinay Kumar, Rattan Pal, Shakti Gupta, Rohit Sharma, Mitalli, Farhat Gulzar, and Vinod Kumar.

Meanwhile, a weightlifting competition under the flagship sports programme, My Youth My Pride was organized today in district Jammu. Around 70 athletes comprising boys and girls participated in a one-day event. Harvinder Singh ADC Jammu presided over the function as the chief guest while Rakesh Kumar was the guest of honor.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest said that J&K youth are immensely talented, and it is imperative to identify the talent and provide it with all necessary support to hone their abilities and ensure their potential is realized sooner than later. Harvinder Singh also extended compliments to the entire team of the Sports Council for organizing different sports competitions under the “My Youth My Pride” initiative.

The 21st J&K UT Squash Championship began in Gindun Sports held in Gindun sports complex, Rajbagh Srinagar. The event which shall culminate on the 4th of this month has received appreciation from all the sports circles as the sport was earlier limited to a selected few. The advent of two squash courts has ensured the sport breaks the class barrier and players from even humble backgrounds are taking to the sport now.

Around 250 players shall compete in sub-junior, junior, and senior category events over four days.

Players from the districts of Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Shopian, Kulgam, Jammu, Udhampur, Kupwara, and Baramulla are participating in the event.

The event is organized by the Squash Association of J&K in coordination with the Sports Council.

Former athlete and chairman organizing committee, Tejinder Singh, and Bilal Ahmad Basketball coach presided over the function as special guests. Both the guests had a word of encouragement with the participants. The event is supervised by Raja Wasim Khan besides Waseem Ahmad Mir, organizing secretary, and Omar Bhat, the event director of the championship.

Hilal Ahmad, in charge of Gindun Sports Complex, is monitoring the event.

The 3rd District Shopian Yogasana Championship was conducted in the Bhatpara Sports Stadium Shopian today in which more than 100 athletes from the different areas and educational institutes of the district are participating.

In a day-long championship, Ayat, Imran, Hoorain, Mehna, and Ahsan emerged as the best players in different categories.

District development commissioner, Shopian presided over the function as chief guest while some eminent educationists including Umar Ahmad and Syed Lateef were special guests on the occasion.

Meanwhile, in district Rajouri the Table Tennis tournament culminated with a final match played in the Indoor sports hall. Many spectators were present at the venue while the match was in progress.
