During the first wave of Pandemic Southampton General Hospital received a surprise gift from the anonymous graffiti artist Banksy. The famous graffiti artist gave his painting of a young boy ditching his Batman and Spider-Man action figures for one of a caped superhero nurse as a thanksgiving gesture to NHS. The work Titled “Game Changer” hung in a corridor of emergency department of the hospital providing staff with a daily morale boost.

The artwork was delivered to the hospital in May with a note, which said: “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white.” The painting was sold for a record price of £16.7m.

Christie’s had said that proceeds from the sale would be used to support health organizations and charities across the UK that enhance the care and treatment provided by the NHS. It also said it would donate a significant portion of the buyer’s premium to those causes.

The artwork has now been replaced with a copy of it and it continues to boost the morale of health workers as well as provides hope to patients.
