Ramban tunnel collapse: 10 labourers trapped, rescue op on

Ramban: A rescue operation is going on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district area where front face of an under construction tunnel collapsed with many labourers feared to be trapped inside.

Officials told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that work on this tunnel was started recently and on Thursday evening, portion of tunnel collapsed. They said three workers have been rescued and at least 10 persons are believed to be still trapped under the debris.

They said that a massive rescue operation was launched which continued throughout the night and is still going on but most of trapped laborers could not be rescued due to shooting stones and large scale debris that has fallen on face of tunnel.

Ramban Deputy Commissioner Massaratul Islam and Senior Superintendent of Police Mohita Sharma were at the spot supervising the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, union minister Jitendra Singh took to Twitter to share more information about the situation. He said that rescue operations were underway and going on in full swing. He added that civil administration and police authorities were monitoring the situation.

“Unfortunate incident of collapse of an under construction tunnel on National Highway stretch between Ramban and Ramsu in district Ramban, Jammu & Kashmir. I’m in constant touch with DC Sh Mussrat Islam. Nearly 10 labour workers trapped under the debris. Another 2 rescued and hospitalised with injuries.”
Those trapped inside the tunnel belonged to Sarla Company engaged in the construction of the tunnel.

The missing workers have been identified as Jadav Roy, 23, Gautam Roy, 22, Sudhir Roy, 31, Dipak Roy, 33, Parimal Roy, 38, Shiva Chowhan, 26, Nawaraj Chowdhury, 26, Kushi Ram, 25, Mujaffar, 38, and Israt, 30–(KNO)
