Kulgam: Suspected militants shot dead an independent Panch at KulporaSrandroo area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam districton Wednesday evening, sources said.

Sources said that the Panch, identified as Mohammad Yaqoob Dar sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Giving details about the incident, a police spokesman in a statement issued late evening, said that today at about 2045hrs Kulgam Police received information about a terror crime incident at Kolpora area of Kulgam and senior officers reached at the terror crime spot.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that terrorists had fired upon a Panch (Independent) identified as Mohammad Yaqoob Dar at KolporaSrundoo area of Kulgam. In this terror incident, he had sustained critical gunshot injuries and was immediately shifted to nearby hospital for the treatment where he succumbed to his injuries,” the spokesman said.

He further said that police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law.

“Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to this terror crime. Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on,” added the spokesman.

Meanwhile, National Conference vice president, Omar Abdullah condemned the killing.

“Very unfortunate. I strongly condemn the assassination of PanchMohdYaqoob Dar and send my condolences to his family. May Allah grant the deceased Jannat,” Omar Abdullah tweeted.
