People want lockdown; self-seekers oppose move: DC Srinagar
Srinagar: Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Mohammad Ajaz Assad Saturday claimed that people want lockdown to be imposed afresh following steep rise in COVID-19 cases here; however some ‘self-seeking’ people oppose the move for their own interests.
DC Srinagar, however, said the government would take a decision only after taking all stakeholders on board and seeking expert medical opinion.
He said the government cares for everyone equally, hence a slew of measures including ‘night curfew’ were taken to prevent the deadly pandemic from spreading further.
“People last year questioned the decision of imposing lockdown, now they want lockdown to be imposed again. We also assess the situation but some self self-seeking people who think for themselves only oppose the move,” DC Srinagar told reporters here.
Replying to a query on measures being taken by the administration for the holy month of Ramazan, Assad said the people are wise enough to understand the situation; hence laid down guidelines needs to be strictly followed.
He said the some people also questioned the recent decision of imposing night curfew in parts of Kashmir including Srinagar saying there is hardly any movement on roads after 10 pm.
“There was huge movement of people at Boulevard Road last evening but some people still questioned the move of imposing night curfew saying there is hardly any movement on roads after 10 pm in Kashmir,” he added.
DC Srinagar further said the guidelines issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) vis-à-vis COVID-19 which directed closure of schools in Kashmir recently are being seriously implemented.
“We are closely monitoring the situation on ground; DDMA issues guidelines from time to time as situation gets dynamic day by day. Schools were functioning normally before few days, now same stand closed on the direction of DDMA, beside night curfew is also in force,” DC Srinagar said.
He also appealed people above 45 years of age to get themselves vaccinated, saying 80 vaccination centers have been opened in Srinagar, which he said lags behind other districts of the Valley in terms of vaccination.
