Kashmir University observes International day of persons with disabilities

Srinagar: In an effort to highlight and discuss the overall issues faced by specially able people in general and to focus on the issues arising out of the COVID scenario,   International day of Persons with Disabilities was observed, today, by Department of Social Work, Kashmir University under the theme ‘Building Back Better: toward a disability- inclusive, Accessible and sustainable Post COVID-19 World’.

In the inaugural session Dr.Sarafaz Ahmad, after a warm welcome, touched upon issues faced by specially abled people during the pandemic scenario and stressed upon the need to create ambience for an inclusive atmosphere.

Dr.Aadil Bashir, Department of social work, highlighted disability scenario issues and challenges after which Shabnam Kamili, State Mission Director, SRCW Social Welfare Department, gave presidential address and appreciated the talent of differently-able student to whom she awarded appreciation trophies later. A documentary prepare by EMMRC was also showcase in the event.

The event also saw a performance by specially able students and a skit by students of social welfare department of Kashmir University which addressed the difficulties faced by differently able in day to day life in society.

In the discussion panel many activists, differently-able able children, people from different NGOs, faculty members of the department of social works participated and highlighted the need for a responsive and inclusive method in educational institutes, banks, public places and transports etc. Adding that differently-abled people should get platforms to show case their talents and should get equal opportunities and extra attention from both government and society.
