Khanpora protests against PDD for power cuts, blocks highway

Baramulla: Residents of Khanpora area of Baramulla on Monday took to streets   and staged strong  protest demonstration against frequent power cuts causing huge inconvenience to people in the chilling cold days.

Witness said that large number of people including women and children of Khanpora Baramulla hit the streets on Monday morning and blocked the Srinagar Muzafarabad national highway to protest against the unscheduled power cuts in the area.

They said due to the blockade of road hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the highway for some time.

Protestors were shouting slogans against the Power Development Department (PDD) and alleged that people of the area are facing hardships from past several weeks. They said the area is metered but continue cuts irk the residents of entire area.

Later a team of Baramulla police reached the spot and assured protesting people that they will forward their grievance to the concern authorities.

Later they call off their protest but threatened that if the department will not solve their problem they will staged another protest and department will be responsible for any untoward incident.

An official of the PDD said that people are using heaters and boilers due to which transformers get overloaded resulting power cuts, however he said they will look into the matter.
