Sopore : A top local commander of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant outfit was killed in a gunfight at Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday.

Police sources confirmed that a local militant commander of JeM identified as Sajad Nawab Dar of Saidpora was killed in an encounter and his body was retrieved from rubble of the destroyed residential house in which the militant was holed up.

The sources further said that an army man was injured and was rushed to military hospital for treatment where his condition is stated to be stable.

Earlier, Army’s 22 RR, SOG and CRPF laid siege to Gul Abad area of Arampora Sopore following inputs about the presence of militants in the area.

Police sources said that the slain militant was active from 2018 and a number of cases were registered against him for “subversive activities.”

“The slain militant was involved in recruiting youth for joining militancy in north Kashmir,” said the sources.

Searches are in progress to clear the area and to ensure explosives, if any, are cleared at the encounter site, a top police official said.

Meanwhile authorities suspended Internet services in Sopore town as a precautionary measure in the wake of this gunfight. The services were, however, restored in the late afternoon.
