Two militants, ‘active associate’ killed in Shopian encounter

Srinagar, Jul 05: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was Friday killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir, police said.

Acting on a specific information about the presence of militants in Batpore-Narwani area of Imam Sahib in Shopian district of south Kashmir, security forces launched a cordon and search operation Friday morning, a police official said.

As the forces were conducting searches of the area, the militants fired upon them, he said.

The forces retaliated and in the ensuing encounter one militants was killed, the official said, adding the body was recovered along with arms and ammunition.

He said the slain militant has been identified as Sameer Ahmad Seh of Sugan Shopian, who as per police records, was affiliated with proscribed outfit Al-Badr and had recently joined Hizbul Mujahideen.

“Seh was involved in several cases pertaining to civilian killings and attacks on security establishments,” police said.

“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All these materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other cases,” police said.

Police spokesman also requested the people to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosives materials if any.
