Shawwal moon sighted, Eid-ul-Fitr on Wednesday

Srinagar, Jun 04: Shawwal moon was sighted in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening, announced Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam.

“Ample testimonies were received from many parts of the state, therefore, the 1st of Shawwal 1440 Hijri will be on Wednesday 5th June. Based on local moon sighting, Eid-ul-Fitr will be on Wednesday 5th June 2019,” Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said.

Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramazan, will be celebrated across the rest of India also on Wednesday.

Delhi’s Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari made the announcement after a meeting of the moon-sighting committee today evening.

“The moon was sighted today. That means Eid will be celebrated on Wednesday in Delhi and other parts of the country,” a senior official at the city’s historic mosque was quoted as saying by PTI.

Eid-ul-Fitr symbolises peace and brotherhood. The festival is marked with feasts and the faithful offers prayers at mosques and Eidgahs to seek blessings of the divine.

People, especially children dress up in their traditional fineries to mark the festival.

Shawwal moon has also been sighted in Pakistan.
